One in five Korean workers are over 60: Statistics

 

One out of five Korean workers are over 60 years old, in an aging society with plunging birth rates.

출산율이 급락하는 고령화 사회에서 우리나라 근로자 5명 중 1명은 60세가 넘습니다.

 

The number of elderly still working and the on-year increase in the number of elderly working both reached all-time highs last year.

여전히 일하는 노인의 수와 전년 대비 증가한 노인의 수는 모두 작년 사상 최고치를 기록했습니다.

 

The number of people over 60 who were working last year stood at 5.86 milion, hitting the highest figure since data compilation began in 1963.

지난해 60세 이상 근로자 수는 586만 명으로 1963년 데이터 작성이 시작된 이래 최고치를 기록했습니다.

 

More people 70 or older are working now that in the past. The number working in this age group last year was 1.72 million, the highest since data compilation for that age began in 2018. 

70세 이상의 사람들은 과거보다 더 많이 일하고 있습니다. 지난해 이 연령대에서 일하는 인원은 172만 명으로 2018년 이 연령대의 데이터 편집이 시작된 이후 가장 많았습니다.

 

Baby boomers are reaching retirement age and accelerating the aging trend.

베이비붐 세대가 정년을 맞이하고 고령화 추세가 가속화되고 있습니다.

 

More people are living healthier and longer lives, riding on the back of medical advancements. And as the elderly population comprises larger portion of the overall population, they expect less financial support from their children and want to work as long las they can.

더 많은 사람들이 의료 발전에 힘입어 더 건강하고 오래 살고 있습니다. 그리고 노인 인구가 전체 인구의 더 많은 부분을 차지하기 때문에, 그들은 자녀들로부터 경제적인 지원을 덜 기대하고 가능한 한 오래 일하기를 원합니다.
