[단어] comprehend와 understand의 차이는?

comprehend: (충분히) 이해하다 = to understand something

understand와 완전히 같아보이는 이 단어는 실제 사용상에서 큰 차이가 있다. 바로 부정문에 주로 사용된다는 점이다.

아래 예문을 통해 익혀보자.

 

- He stood staring at him, unable to comprehend.

그는 현 상황을 이해하지 못한 채 그를 서서 바라봤다.

- It's not easy to comprehend other's minds. 

다른 사람의 마음을 이해하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 

 

- He needs quite some time to comprehend what's going on.

그는 이해하는데 꽤 많은 시간이 걸린다. 

 

위와같이 not이 붙어 있지 않더라도 의미상 부정적인 느낌이 강한경우 comprehend를 주로 사용한다. 

 

I can understand what you mean. 

I can't comprehend what you mean.
