get the gist : 핵심을 파악하다, 논점을 이해하다

원어민들은 자주쓰는 표현이지만 한국인들에게 조금 낯선 get the gist.  뜻을 해석하보면 어떠한 상황속에서 핵심을 파악하다, 논점을 파악하다 라는 뜻이다.
